PSHE

INTENT

At Golborne St. Thomas’, we aim to provide pupils to give children the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century. The curriculum covers key areas which will support children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships, and financial matters and will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society. We use the SCARF scheme of work which covers the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance (as set out by the Department for Education). It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

IMPLEMENTATION

At St Thomas’, children have access to the latest technology. As we believe that technological skills are paramount to our children’s future successes. St Thomas’ teaches PSHE through the SCARF scheme. This provides a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. The SCARF curriculum has six core learning themes: me and my relationships, Valuing difference, Keeping Safe, Rights and Respect, Being my best and Changing and Growing. These are taught on a weekly basis and evidenced using the See-Saw app. The SRE is delivered by a company called HH kids, who undertake a parental talk before delivering sessions to the children. There are many other opportunities where children are involved in PSHE outside of the direct lessons, including assemblies and debates where a range of themes are covered. Some other discreet links include assemblies, visitors from different faiths and backgrounds, cross-curriculum teaching and the school council.

IMPACT

All of the work children produce is evident on Seesaw, a digital platform, which teachers use to assess the progress each student is making. In addition, we believe high-quality discussions taking place within lessons between staff and pupils provide children with useful feedback in order to progress. At St Thomas’, we aim to create learners who feel confident to be themselves and fulfil their potential without fear. We know that an effective PSHE education provides our pupils with the building blocks that allow them to keep themselves safe, make healthy choices and prepare them for life in modern Britain. Throughout our PSHE curriculum we aim to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of all pupils. At the end of the year, children are expected to apply the knowledge that they have gained through PSHE lessons to their daily life both in and out of school.
