We made a compass out of a magnet, a piece of wood and a bowl of water. At first the compass points in the wrong direction, but slowly it turns till the north end of the magnet (red) pointed north. By then banging this end with a hammer we were able to make all the magnetic particles point back to north and therefore make the magnet stronger.
