Intent

At Golborne St Thomas, we are committed to providing children with a comprehensive and well-rounded Religious Education curriculum that will promote their personal, spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. We firmly believe that delivering top-tier Religious Education, providing children with the knowledge and understanding of Christianity, is essential in aiding each child’s personal growth and development. Additionally, we acknowledge the significance of educating children about various faiths to help them thrive in our diverse, multicultural society. Our Religious Education curriculum ensures that children are not only introduced to Christian principles and values but also have the opportunity to explore a wide range of major world religions to foster a broad understanding and appreciation.

Implementation

Religious Education and worship form an integral component of the educational journey at St Thomas’. At Golborne St Thomas, we follow the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education Religious Education Syllabus. This curriculum engages and challenges children through an exploration of core concepts and questions. The children are explicitly taught Christian concepts and God’s big salvation story alongside World Faiths. Throughout the curriculum, children will experience a wide range of creative and multi-sensory activities that will help them discover the answers to fundamental questions, as well as have opportunities for reflection and discussion. Through an open investigative enquiry approach, children are given the opportunity to investigate, reflect, and evaluate.

Impact

The RE Curriculum at St Thomas allows children to gain knowledge and understanding of Christianity as well as other major world religions. Children are able to ask and consider challenging questions, demonstrate respect and tolerance for the opinions and beliefs of others, and develop the skills to be reflective on their learning. They learn to consider, analyse, interpret, and evaluate issues of trust, faith, and ethics. Children in our school also demonstrate an understanding of the school’s Christian values, know what these look like in practice, and apply this understanding when making everyday choices.
