ART & D.T

INTENT

At Golborne St. Thomas’, we aim to provide pupils with an engaging, creative and flexible art curriculum that will allow children the freedom to express themselves in a variety of creative ways. Our art curriculum also ensures that pupils become digitally literate (able to use technology to express themselves and develop their ideas fully) at a level suitable to be active participants in a ever-increasing digital world. We recognise the importance of teaching our pupils how to become responsible, creative, kind and confident digital citizens, whilst promoting a balanced digital life. At Golborne St Thomas’, we aim to facilitate children’s curiosity within art and allow them to explore different materials and medium in order to do this. We also aim to expose children to many different cultures and how history has impacted on art throughout the centuries.

IMPLEMENTATION

At St Thomas’, children are provided with a curriculum which allows them to express themselves through drawing, painting, collage and printing. In Key Stage 2, sketch books are also used to allow the children the opportunity to plan and amend their work before creating as final piece. As we believe that technological skills are paramount to our children’s future successes, we have therefore deployed one-to-one iPads in Years 1-6, with children in EYFS also having access to iPads. This programme allows for research and for tracking and assessing the children’s journey through art. Artists from a variety of backgrounds and cultures are studied within the art curriculum and cross-curriculum links are made in order for art to be an integral part of the topic being completed. Children are also encouraged to evaluate their work at an age-appropriate level.

IMPACT

At St. Thomas’, children are inspired to express themselves freely through art without the fear of being judged. The assessment through seesaw skills allows the teacher to see strengths within the children that may not be evident in other subject areas. Children have the confidence to discuss their ideas and get excited by creating unique pieces of work which truly express them as an individual. Thei knowledge and respect of other cultures and the history of art grows which provides them with the skills that are also useful in other areas of the curriculum. The outcomes experienced by the children equip them with the skills and ideas needed for their future and gives them the confidence to make individual choices. Most importantly, children enjoy themselves through the unique experiences provided through art.
