Careers-Related Learning
Careers-Related Learning at St Thomas’
We are delighted to be part of the Greater Manchester Careers Hub’s primary pilot – ‘Start Small; Dream Big.’ The purpose of the programme is to challenge pupils to ‘think big’ about their futures. Through this programme, we aim to positively impact our pupil’s mindset when it comes to their futures and to challenge any stereotypes they hold.
Intent
Our aim is to inspire and prepare our pupils for their future by embedding Careers-Related Learning throughout the primary school experience. By weaving this learning through our PSHE curriculum, we help children develop the confidence, skills, and awareness needed to explore the world of work and the wide range of opportunities available to them. We intend to broaden their horizons, challenge stereotypes, and nurture aspirations, ensuring all pupils understand that their potential is limitless regardless of their background.
Implementation
Careers-Related Learning is seamlessly integrated into our PSHE curriculum, with lessons and activities designed to develop essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. We enrich this learning with meaningful Employer Encounters, where local professionals and business representatives visit the school to share insights into their roles, career paths, and workplaces. These encounters provide pupils with real-world examples of how education connects to future opportunities, sparking curiosity and ambition. Additionally, themed weeks, assemblies, and practical activities ensure careers education is engaging, relevant, and accessible to all.
Impact
Through this approach, our pupils develop a strong sense of self-belief, an understanding of the diverse world of work, and the motivation to set and pursue goals. They leave our school equipped with the foundational skills and aspirations to thrive in their education and future careers, having built the confidence to dream big and the awareness to explore possibilities beyond their immediate experiences.
